Public help Police to apprehend burglar

1 min read

Police have a quick thinking and observant member of the public to thank for helping to stop a burglary in Marewa, Napier.

Yesterday at around 2:30pm a concerned citizen rang Police saying he had noticed a suspicious man moving through the Gallipoli Avenue area.

Police immediately responded and located and arrested the suspicious man who was already wanted for other dishonesty offending.

“He was arrested carrying an iPad which had been engraved with the details of the school it had been stolen from,” says Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard.

“The fact the iPad was engraved meant we could quickly identify where it was taken from and return the item to its rightful owner.

“This is a fantastic example of why being proactive and taking preventative measures to protect your belongings is worth the effort.”

A 38-year-old man has been charged with receiving stolen property and two counts of burglary. He appeared in Hastings District Court today.

“We want to thank our quick-thinking member of the public who took the initiative to ring us as soon as he witnessed this man behaving suspiciously,” says Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard.

“Community assistance like this is fantastic to see and often helps us to get good results, so never hesitate to ring Police if you witness anything out of the ordinary.

“And make sure you take the time to protect your property, advice on how to do so can be found under the "advice" section of the New Zealand Police website.”
