Rebels motorcycle gang shut down with community help

1 min read

Police can confirm the Rebels motorcycle gang headquarters, previously situated on Vauges Road, Northcote, Christchurch has been shut down.

The rebels have been the subject of numerous search warrants over the last few months, during which a number or firearms and drug offences were identified.

The type of harm caused by these organisations cannot be underestimated. Police are grateful to the community for standing up against this behaviour, providing them with a large volume of information to assist them in having the gang headquarters shutdown.

This is a great example of the community and New Zealand Police working in partnership. The community made it quite clear from the start that they did not want this criminal enterprise setting up in their area and police supported them in that view.

Sergeant Richard Wilson of the Canterbury Offenders Taskforce says, "Quite rightly, the public do not want these criminal gangs set up in their neighbourhoods, around their schools, their businesses or their shopping malls. Police had received numerous calls regarding the anti-social behaviour, often stemming from drug and alcohol abuse, which caused a variety of problems in the community. It is through the assistance of the community, in partnership with the Police these issue have been resolved. The ultimate goal here is to have these people becoming productive members of society, something we will not give up on."

Those suffering from drug addiction are encouraged to contact the drug and alcohol helpline on 0800 787 797.

Those with information which could support Police in fighting drug and gang crime can contact their local station or report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
