Alexandra Police have released the names of the people involved in a head-on collision which occurred at about 12.50pm yesterday afternoon on State Highway 8 at Butcher's Dam, about 5km south of Alexandra in Central Otago.
The 23-year-old woman driver who died in the crash was Kirra Lee Smith. She was an American citizen living in Wanaka.
Her 22-year-old female passenger, Tessa Senior, is a British citizen living in Wanaka.
The driver of the Holden Captiva four-wheel drive was 62-year-old Cromwell man, Maxwell James Birtles.
Both Mr Birtles and Ms Senior have now been transferred to Dunedin Hospital.
Police inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.
Local Police iwi liaison officer, Constable Lance Davies, today performed a karakia to bless the crash site.
