Staying safe and having fun at the annual AIMS Games

1 min read

Western Bay of Plenty Police would like to welcome the hundreds of competitors, coaches and supporters heading to Tauranga and the surrounding areas for the annual AIMS Games

Starting on Sunday 4 September and running until Friday 9 September, the AIMS Games (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) is one of the biggest sporting events for 11 to 13-year-olds in New Zealand.

With pupils from more than 250 schools taking part, Police are expecting an influx of young competitors and their coaches, teachers, family and supporters to the district and we’d like to help everyone stay safe.

If you’re heading to Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Papamoa to attend the Games and make the most of the local sights and attractions, please remember Western Bay of Plenty roads are busy.

This is a timely reminder of some basic steps you can take to keep yourself, and everybody else, safe on our roads. They include:

  • Always wear a seatbelt
  • Reduce your speed
  • Drive to the conditions
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Allow more time for your journey on unfamiliar roads

Police would like everyone to enjoy their time in and around Tauranga for the Games, but would encourage younger visitors in particular to always let someone know where they are going and, ideally, stay in a group with their friends.

Be wary of unfamiliar areas after dark and arrange transport to be picked up when required.

Drivers, especially while attending sporting events, protect your property by trying to park in well-lit areas and making sure your vehicle is locked.

Don’t leave valuables unattended. If you need to leave them in your vehicle, keep them out of sight.

Following these simple measures can help to ensure your trip is happy and crime-free. One last thing... good luck to everyone competing at the Games!
