Timaru sexual assault - information sought

Timaru Police are investigating the sexual assault of a female that occurred between 3am and 5am this morning in the garden area outside the Timaru Public library on Sophia Street.
 
A witness told Police they saw four Maori or Pacific Island males with the female.  The witness shouted at them - causing them to run off towards Church Street.
 
The scene is cordoned off and Police staff and ESR will be carrying out a detailed scene examination throughout the day.
 
The female victim is currently undergoing a medical examination. Police would like anyone in the vicinity of the public library between 3am and 5am this morning to come forward as they may have information that will assist the enquiry. Also, anyone who may know a group of four males who may have been spending time in the area at that time of the morning is encouraged to share any information that may be of assistance.
