Unlawful hunting takes a hit in Central Otago

1 min read

Earlier today, Alexandra and Omakau Police, with assistance from Dunedin AOS, executed a search warrant in the Ida Valley area in relation to unlawful hunting.

As a result of that a male and a female, aged 27 and 28, have been charged with 12 offences relating to unlawful hunting, trespass, unlawful posession of firearms, and possesion of cannabis.

Two 4WD drive vehicles and a quad bike has been seized along with GPS and dog tracking collars.

Both persons, of Central Otago, will appear in the Alexandra District Court on Tuesday 28 July.

Police would like to remind all members of the public that in regards to firearms safety, all persons need to be licenced or under supervision of a licenced person and you need to hunt in approved areas or with a permit.

Central Otago Police have an anti poaching scheme in place and urge members of the public who see anyone acting suspiciously to contact their local police.

Unlawful hunting is not tolerated and police will continue to work with land owners and the local community to help reduce the effect of unlawful hunting in the areas.

Released by Sergeant Derek Ealson, Alexandra Police.
