The condition of the teenage boy who was taken to hospital following a fight this morning at a rugby match has improved.

The 14 year-old was initially described as being in a serious condition but has since improved and is now described as being in a status 3-4 condition (moderate to minor injuries). The victim is speaking with Police at hospital.    Multiple Police units were sent to the scene at the time the fight broke out, but the fighting had stopped prior to Police arrival.    The fight is believed to have involved between 30-40 people, including members of both teams, family members and spectators.    During this time the 14 year-old boy was knocked out and was subsequently taken to hospital.    Police have spoken with a number of witnesses and are following strong lines of enquiry as to the person responsible for the boy's injuries.    ENDS   Media- a short stand-up verbalising this statement will be held at 2.30pm at the Otahuhu Rugby Grounds, just off Kuranui Place. This will be the only opportunity to get comment this weekend on this incident.    Beth Bates/NZ Police
