Update - Homicide investigation in Wairere Road

The man located by Police this morning in relation to the incident last night in Wairere Road will be appearing in the Whanganui District Court this afternoon.

At this stage the 45 year-old man has been charged with male assaults female and assault with intent to injure. The investigation is still in its early stages and no decision can be made yet on any other charges.

The body of the 50 year-old male victim will be removed from the scene this afternoon and a post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow morning. His next of kin have been advised however formal identification is yet to take place and his name will not be released until this process is complete.

A woman who was at the address when the incident took place was treated for minor injuries at hospital and has since been discharged. Police and Victim Support are liaising with her and her family.

The scene examination is well underway and will continue throughout the weekend.

"Because the matter is now before the court we are limited to what we can say, however I can reassure the public, that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this, and the actions of Police have resulted in this incident being swiftly resolved" says Detective Inspector Bruce Scott.
