1 min read

Canterbury Police can confirm the victim of yesterday’s (4 November 2014) fatal crash on State Highway 1 near Rolleston was 68 year old Therese Maureen SMITH from Greymouth.

The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Mrs SMITH was the driver and sole occupant of a black Toyota Premio that was travelling south behind a stock truck and trailer when her vehicle was struck by a north-bound car that had collided with vehicle in front of her.

Mrs SMITH’s family have issued the following statement:

“The sudden death of a friend or family member is very hard to come to terms with.  We have lost our mum in tragic circumstances and as a family we are pulling together to support each other at this very sad time.  Our family understands the public and media are interested in the event that led to our loss but ask for privacy while we work through our grief.  We intend to hold a funeral where family and friends can come together and pay their respects to our much-loved mum and ask that the media respect our request for privacy and do not attempt to attend or approach us for any further comment.  We would like to thank the emergency services, particularly those who were first on the scene, for their support.”

Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
