Weather set to cause problems for drivers in South - police warn; Drive to the conditions

1 min read

Southern Police are reminding motorists that with the winter season now upon us, extra care needs to be taken on our roads.
District Road Policing Manager Inspector Tania Baron says, so far, much of the country has had a mild winter, but the Southern region is now well and truly feeling the winter in full force.

"It's important for motorists to realise that when the weather gets wet, or icy or snowy, their driving behaviour needs to change to reflect that.   Driving to the conditions means  exactly that…don’t drive at 100 km/h just because the speed  sign says so, reduce your speed in the wet, ice or snow if necessary," she says.

Motorists need to take into account the fact that the friction that keeps cars on the road is reduced considerably in icy and wet conditions. When driving in winter conditions Police advise motorists to allow extra time for their journey, plan the route they are taking, take regular breaks, slow down and never drive impaired.

"Southern Police will be visible on the road across the region as we work to prevent road trauma by slowing people down and addressing bad driving behaviour,” says Ms Baron."

Safe winter driving includes keeping windscreens clean and fully defrosted, taking care in shady areas where there may be ice on the road, using headlights in fog and keeping good following distances.

“We want everyone to be safe on our roads this winter, so take extra care and drive to the conditions,” says Ms Baron.
