The PCT was no problem for over 100 Year 10 students at Rangi Ruru Girls' School, although they did have the benefit of completing it in teams.

As part of their Building and Bonding Day at the start of the school year, Physical Education Officers Glen Robertson (Canterbury District) and Sean Richardson (Southern District) took the girls through a modified PCT course. It was run as a team event to encourage teamwork, communication and class bonding.

First they ran through it in small groups, then as classes, and then they were given the option do it individually as a time challenge, which almost all tried.

During the lunch break, two of our trainee dog handlers and their dogs, Nico and Aero, gave a demonstration and answered questions. But it was trainee detector dog Paddy, a golden Labrador puppy, who stole the show with his antics and energy.

Glen says the students all took the opportunity to jump into the challenges of the day.

“There were lots of laughs, a few tired bodies and a hint of competitiveness throughout the day.

"The feedback was hugely positive with most heading away from the event with smiles on their faces, and they all loved the dogs coming to visit."
