Wellington-based staff joined in the celebrations at Out in the Park at the weekend (24 February) – and if they were upstaged by our famous Rainbow car, no one seemed to mind.

The colourful gathering at Waitangi Park – which launched the capital’s Pride celebrations - included live music, performances and stalls including a Police recruitment tent.

Kapiti-Mana Area Commander Inspector Tracey Thompson, Sergeant Loretta Hunt-Tevaga (Wellington District Pacific Liaison Coordinator) and Constable Krista Kite (Wellington PST) supported the event, with the help of Police National Headquarters staff and volunteer patrollers.

“The event was packed throughout the day and there was great Police representation - including our Pasifika and Ethnic Community Patrol volunteers who work closely with us,” says Loretta.

“Yet again the Rainbow car was a hit, with many members of the public taking photos with it. People also told us they were happy to hear the car was going to remain as a community engagement car in Auckland.”

The car, unveiled earlier this month, was created to and acknowledge the relationship between Police and New Zealand’s Rainbow communities.

“To get this feedback was great as the car is one of the many ways Police celebrate the strength we gain from valuing the diversity of our people and the communities we serve,” says Loretta.

The recruitment stand also proved popular, with 18 people signing up to start their police journey.

“The Rainbow Car and Police presence were very well received,” says Tracey. “In fact, it’s fair to say our car was the star of the show.

“There was a lot of positive community engagement and Police Recruitment were out in force encouraging people to join Police.

“Many international visitors attended and were in awe about how our police service is embracing the LGBTIQ+ community and diversity across the board. I have no doubt from the photos taken that our presence will be noted around the world.”

The Rainbow car will remain in Wellington District for the next two weeks. It will join the Wellington Pride Parade on 10 March and a national Police Open Day event the following day before being driven back to Auckland.
