The vehicle that plunged off the summit of Mt Wellington on Sunday afternoon, killing nine year-old Britney Abbott in the process, will be removed from the mount by crane at about 4pm today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Julian Rinckes says it'll be a slow process as the Police need to preserve as much evidence that might be in the vehicle as possible.
"We're investigating the sudden death of a child and the injuring of another while a man was at the wheel, so obviously our investigation will be thorough and robust," he said.
"The Serious Crash Unit has been helping reconstruct the movements of the vehicle before and during the crash and the Specialist Search Group has been assisting us examine the wider scene for any clues about why this sad tragedy happened."
The injured four year-old girl was released from hospital this morning while the driver of the vehicle is expected to remain in hospital for another few days. His condition is reported to be stable.
Police spoke briefly to the driver last evening and are assessing his version of events along with reports from many witnesses to the fatal crash.
