New Police strategic plan released

The Police strategic plan to 2010 'Policing with Confidence - the New Zealand Way' was released yesterday.

The new plan outlines the direction of policing over the next three years, highlighting the three main goals of community reassurance, policing with confidence and organisational development.

In presenting the plan, Commissioner Howard Broad described the document as a "stepping stone towards our future that recognises New Zealand Police have some real opportunities to make a difference over the next few years".

Commissioner Broad said contemporary policing was complex and dynamic, and it was essential that Police understood the environment in which they operated and the challenges they faced. NZ Police would use the next three years to shape a collective, 'whole of government' approach to policing, he said.

Fundamental to this approach was the revision of the Police Act, which would involve wide community consultation.
