Search for missing Canterbury trapper suspended

1 min read

The search for a missing Canterbury possum trapper has been suspended.

83 year old Allan Robert HILL from Loburn has been missing in the Ashley Gorge area since last Wednesday [6 July]. He had gone into the bush to trap possums and was expected out that afternoon. He was not equipped for an overnight stay. Conditions in the area have been poor with strong winds, rain and snow at times.

The search has been reviewed by independent search and rescue experts. Independent medical advice has been received that any possible timeframes for survival have been well and truly exceeded.

Northern Canterbury Police Area Commander, Inspector Dave Lawry, says it is important to note that the search has been suspended, not ended. “Police will actively follow up any new information on Mr Hill’s whereabouts” he says. “In the next few weeks Police will look to deploy further dog search teams in the area as conditions allow.”

“Search teams have put in a huge effort over the past seven days in difficult terrain and unfavourable weather conditions but have unfortunately not managed to locate Mr Hill.

"More than 100 LandSAR and 15 Police personnel from all around Canterbury have been involved in the search, along with additional personnel from as far away as Westport and Blenheim.”

Police have expressed their condolences to Mr Hill’s family and are providing support. The Coroner has been notified.
