Canterbury Police to enforce lowered speed tolerance

1 min read

Slow down, don't drink and drive, and be patient - that's the message Canterbury Police want motorists to stick to this Labour Day Weekend.

"Last Labour Day weekend saw one fatality on Canterbury's roads," says Canterbury Road Policing Manager Inspector Al Stewart. "This year we want to make sure everyone gets home safely - no exceptions."

Inspector Stewart says lowered speed tolerances are now a permanent fixture for all holiday periods. "Canterbury police will be out in force this weekend and anyone caught exceeding the speed limit by 5km/h can expect a ticket.

"We will have additional patrols and alcohol checkpoints on the highways, and in towns and cities across the district," says Inspector Stewart.

"Impatient drivers are another factor often contributing to serious and fatal road crashes.

"A bit of patience, keeping a safe following distance, and being prepared to take a few minutes longer on your trip won't change your life. But getting impatient and taking risks could change your life and others' lives for the worse.

"We want to avoid serious injuries or fatal crashes this weekend. By slowing down and driving to the conditions we can ensure that every journey is a safe journey."

The road toll for Canterbury stands at 22 this year compared to 37 for the same time last year.
