Christchurch Police have today arrested at 16 year old Christchurch male in connection with a recent power company phone scam in the city.

Acting Detective Sergeant Hamish Wilson, of the Christchurch fraud squad, says the male has been charged with a number of deception-related offences and accessing a computer system for a dishonest purpose.

He will appear tomorrow [Friday 21 October, 10.30am] in the Christchurch Youth Court.

Acting Detective Sergeant Wilson says police had received eight complaints during the past two months in relation to the scam.

Customers had been phoned by someone claiming to be from Meridian Energy or Contact Energy, and were told their power would be disconnected unless they provided credit card details.
