Body discovered in Richmond Ranges

Nelson Police Search and Rescue teams have this evening found a body, believed to be that of missing tramper Sharny Abbott, 23, of Richmond.

The body was found about 5.50pm in the Roding River, about 400 metres downstream from the Hackett junction.

Search and rescue teams have been scouring the area all day in search of Mr Abbott, who was expected to return from a tramp on Sunday. He was last seen at the Starveall Hutt about 1pm on Sunday. There has been heavy rainfall in the area since Sunday.

Mr Abbott was well-equipped and had outdoor experience, having previously been in the army.

A formal identification is yet to be carried out. Next of kin have been notified.
