Police hunt for escaped prisoner

Police are trying to locate David Lothien after he broke out of a prison van at a BP petrol station in Dannevirke yesterday around 5:30pm (Wednesday, 17 April).

Lothien, a 21-year-old from Hastings was being transported from Spring Hill Prison in Waikato to Hawkes Bay Regional Prison via Manawatu. He had pleaded guilty to a serious assault charge and was due to appear in the Napier District Court for sentencing.

Sub-area manager Senior Sergeant Nathan Davis said: "Police are actively searching for Mr Lothien and we believe that he may have affiliations in the area. We want to remind people that assisting an escaped prisoner is an offence and may lead to an investiagtion and prosecution."

He is 186cm tall, was wearing green overalls at the time of his escape, and he has a cast on his left arm.

The public are reminded not to approach Lothien but if you have seen him or know of his whereabouts please call the Dannevirke Police on (06) 374 4500, or phone 111 and ask for Police.
