Children safely out of armed offender area

Police at the Penrose armed incident where a man remains holed up in a Great South Rd Westpac Bank branch have evacuated 10 children and three staff from a daycare centre nearby.

The centre, on the corner of Sultan St and Great South Rd, is within the cordoned area so was not accessible to the childrens’ parents, hence the Police-assisted evacuation.

The Police Negotiating Team is still in contact with the armed man who has requested the presence of a friend of his. Police are facilitating this request.
