Part of Featherston's main street is cordoned off this morning as police investigate what appears to be serious assault in which a man has received head injuries.
Detective Sergeant Bill van Woerkom, Masterton CIB, said a local bus driver found the injured man about 7am, lying in bushes in a park near the RSA in central Featherston.
The driver contacted staff at Featherston Railway Station who alerted emergency services. The man, who is European and in his 30s to 40s, is currently being assessed at Masterton Hospital.
Police do not know the man's identity but he has short brown hair. It's not known how the man was injured or how long he had been lying on the ground.
Part of Fitzherbert and Fox Streets have been cordoned off as police conduct a scene examination. Traffic is being diverted along neighbouring streets.
Detective Sergeant van Woerkom is appealing for information from people who may know who the man is or how and when he was injured.
"Any information at all will help our investigation," he says. "Local people or passing motorists may have seen or heard something that will indicate what has happened and where.
"We don't know as yet if the injuries happened overnight or early this morning."
Police are unable to provide further information at this stage.
