Kilbirnie Post Shop robbed at gunpoint

1 min read

Wellington Police are appealing for information after the New Zealand Post Shop in Kilbirnie was robbed at gunpoint early this afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller, Wellington CIB, said the robbery happened at the Bay Road, Kilbirnie, branch around 1.50pm today. Two men, one of whom was carrying a firearm, threatened staff and left with an undisclosed sum of money.

"We've had reports of a white vehicle being driven towards the Mt Victoria tunnel and passing other vehicles shortly after 2pm," Detective Senior Sergeant Miller said. "Details are still sketchy and we don't know if this vehicle is linked with the offenders or not."

He said the Post Shop was busy as the robbery happened towards the end of the lunchtime rush. Staff and customers were shaken but unhurt.

Descriptions of the offenders and the firearm are not yet available.

"More than a dozen people were inside the Post Shop when the robbery happened," Detective Senior Sergeant Miller said. "We're getting statements from those people to see what they can tell us."

Police are appealing for information from members of the public who were near the Post Shop around the time of the robbery and who may have seen the offenders enter or leave the bank - possibly in the Childers Terrace area.

"We need to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity near the Post Shop today, or over the last week to contact Wellington Police as soon as possible."
