Police are reminding motorists to be especially vigilant and patient over the weekend as many holiday-makers return home
"For many lucky people the holidays are only now coming to an end and we expect that there will be increased traffic over the coming weekend, especially with the Wellington Anniversary Day on Monday. We want all drivers to keep the simple lifesavers in mind - speed, alcohol and use of safety belts. We want everyone to get home from their holidays alive.
While we had the lowest road toll in over 50 years last year, the holiday road toll is disappointing," said Superintendent Paula Rose, the National Manager, Road Policing, said today.
The holiday road toll now stands at 26 after the death of a Waikato man who was injured in a crash in late December.
"Speed, alcohol and failure to wear safety belts are factors in the vast majority of fatal crashes. By ensuring that you and your family keep these things in mind, you may well be making the difference between the end of a wonderful break and the beginning of a family tragedy. "
