Homicide At Auckland Prison

North Shore Police have launched a homicide enquiry after the body of a male inmate was discovered at Auckland Prison yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim LIBBY, Officer in Charge of the North Shore CIB says the inmate was found dead inside a sector of the East Wing of the prison at about 11.00am Sunday 1 March 2009.

The deceased inmate has been identified as:

FAAVAE/ Tue

Male - aged 23 years of age.

Samoan born

"FAAVAE was serving time in prison for aggravated robbery," Mr. LIBBY said

"A post mortem examination has revealed the deceased died as a result of injuries sustained in a serious assault by other inmates."

"Police are concentrating the preliminary phase of their enquiries into the activities that took place in the East Wing prior to the discovery of the body."

"A forensic examination is continuing at the prison and there are almost twenty police officers assigned to the investigation," Mr. LIBBY said
