Exhibits found at the scene of the Ruapehu ski field arson may hold the key to solving the investigation.
Millions of dollars worth of damage was caused when fires were deliberately lit on the ski field on Friday, 13 February, destroying the Knoll Ridge Cafe and a nearby workshop. The building housing the chairlift was also fire damaged.
The inquiry is moving forward with a number of exhibits sent to ESR and for fingerprinting. One of the tests being carried out is a tool match to help police in knowing what tools were used to break into the buildings. Fingerprint results are expected back within a week, although ESR results may take longer.
Detective Chris Chapman who is heading the investigation said: "We are looking forward to receiving some results back and are hopeful it will move us even further forward. It is fair to say that we do have some persons of interest and are increasingly confident that we will identify those responsible."
Also of some interest is a boot print found near the scene of the crime. It is believed to be a match to a Hi-Tech hiking boot, possibly the Arusha or Largo 2 model, and police want to hear from anyone who finds a boot or pair of boots matching this description in the Taupo, Turangi or Ruapehu areas.
