Crash victim named

Levin Police are continuing to investigate a three-vehicle crash that occurred on State Highway 57, near the township of Shannon, yesterday ( 5 August, 2015) evening which has left one person dead.

The crash between a south bound truck and vehicle, and a north bound truck happened at about 4:45pm.

Emergency services attended the scene and all six people involved in the crash were transported to hospital.

Tragically the driver of the north bound truck died in Wellington Hospital shortly after the crash.

He was Grant Andrew Jackson, aged 56, of Shannon.

The other five injured people are currently in Palmerston North Hospital.

The male driver of the south bound truck is in a stable condition, the male driver of the vehicle is in a critical condition, and the three passengers of the vehicle (two females and a male) are all stable.

Detective Sergeant Peter Vine of the Levin CIB says: "The crash investigation is ongoing and we are speaking with witnesses to assist in determining the crash causes."

The Serious Crash Unit is supporting Levin Police with the investigation.

"Over the coming days we will speak with the crash victims and I want to sincerely thank everyone who came to their assistance at the scene."  

A scene examination and vehicle recovery operation is being conducted and State Highway 57 will be closed between 10am and 3pm today (6 August, 2015). The area affected by this closure is between Tavistock Road and the Shannon Township.

Diversions are in place around this scene and motorists are encouraged to avoid this area over these hours. Further information is available on the NZTA website.
