Deceased one year old baby named

Canterbury Police can now name the one year old baby girl who is at the centre of a homicide investigation as Aaliyah Ashlyn CHAND who was born in New Zealand and is of Indian decent.  She passed away in Christchurch Hospital ICU at approximately 8.30pm on 7 January 2015 with her parents by her bedside.

Police are awaiting the results of a post mortem that was carried out yesterday (8 January 2015). 

Detective Senior Sergeant Anderson says “This is a tragic time for the family and they have requested that their privacy be respected.  We (Canterbury Police and Victim Support) are continuing to support the family.  Scene examinations have been completed at the babysitter’s property on Worcester Street and the parents address in Addington.  Investigators are continuing to gather and collate information relating to this case.  We are not in a position to release any more information relating to this active investigation at this time.”

A homicide investigation into the serious head injuries the baby sustained is being undertaken Canterbury Police CIB.

Canterbury Police will not speculate on what the out outcome of this ongoing investigation will be or whether anyone would face charges. 

When Police are in a position to make further comment another media release will be made.
