Fatal single vehicle crash on SH1 near Greta Valley

Canterbury Police and emergency services are at the scene of a fatal single vehicle crash down a bank on SH1 near Greta Valley approximately 1km south of the Hurunui River bridge shortly before 10.22am this morning (7 February 2015).  At this stage we are unable to confirm the direction of travel of the vehicle prior to the crash.

There were six occupants in the vehicle which is described as a rented white Hyundai mini-van.  One person has been confirmed as deceased at the scene.  One person has been taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance with minor/moderate injuries.  Four other people have been taken to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter (Westpac Helicopter and a helicopter from Nelson) with serious and moderate injuries.

The death has been referred to the Coroner who will determine cause of death.  No further details will be released until next of kin have been fully informed.

Police investigations into the crash are continuing and no further details will be released at this stage.

Canterbury Police are appealing for anyone who saw the white min-van on SH1 prior to the crash or may have witnessed the mini-van leave the road approximately 1km south of the Hurunui River bridge to contact them by calling 03 363 7400 option 5.
