Media advisory: Wellington Community Team Launch Bicycle Initiative

Media are invited to attend the launch of the Wellington City Police Community Team’s ‘Cops on Bikes’ initiative next week.

The community team, headed by Sergeant Hamish Knight, will use four new kitted out mountain bikes to patrol Wellington City communities and engage with the public on two wheels.

The bikes also provide an opportunity to conduct road policing prevention activities in the CBD focusing on distractions such as cell phones, and seatbelts.

While the bikes will mainly be used by the community team, other frontline staff can also use them for activities including policing public events.

The Team also received support from the Wellington City Council who provided a bike rack and maintenance gear.

Sergeant Knight and Assistant Commissioner Sandra Venables (Road Policing and Prevention) will be available to interview about the initiative.

Wellington Councillor Sarah Free, who holds the public transport, cycling, and walking portfolio will also be available to speak to.

When: Monday 23 April, at 9.30am
Where: Frank Kitts Park next to the children’s playground.

To confirm your attendance please contact the Police Media Team on media@police.govt.nz by today, Friday 20 April at 5pm
