Six people have been rescued from the Mokohinau Islands after a yacht sank early this morning.

Police were called at around 5am following reports a 30 foot catamaran had struck rocks.

Six people on board managed to get into a tender and make it to shore.

They were picked up by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Northland Rescue Helicopter and taken to Whangarei Hospital with minor injuries.

The Ports of Auckland pilot vessel Wakatere was also sent to the location.

The catamaran, with two adults and four children on board, was on its way to Great Barrier Island from Whangaparoa at the time.

It is now completely underwater with only the mast visible.
