Police investigate suspicious fire in Christchurch

Canterbury Police are investigating a suspicious fire that is believed to have started at approximately 8.09am this morning on Barbadoes St just north of the intersection with Hereford St in Christchurch city.

Witnesses have told Police they saw a number of people running away from the address after the fire was started.

The fire in the two story house is reported to have caused severe damage to an upstairs room.  Police understand the house was an earthquake damaged property and was not being lived in at the time of the fire.

Police and Fire Service investigations into the incident are continuing and Fire investigators are expected to conduct a scene examination later today. 

Police ask anyone who may have run from the house or witnessed the incident to contact them urgently by calling 03 363 7400 and selecting option 5.
