Hamilton Police investigating an alleged indecent assault outside Waikato Hospital overnight are commending the actions of three members of the public who saw something and intervened, chasing off the attacker.

Detective Sergeant Nick O'Brien of the Hamilton CIB said Police were called to an area of reserve land opposite Gate One of Waikato Hospital near the Blood Bank about 5.10pm.

"The land is by the Ohaupo Rd- Pembroke St intersection and it appears our 25-year-old victim has been walking when she was struck from behind by an attacker and knocked to the ground.

"Our victim has come to and become aware of a male on top of her indecently assaulting her. Three women passing by noticed something amiss and chased off the offender who fled on what was described as a white push-bike."

Mr O'Brien praised the actions of the Good Samaritans and said other members of the public can help solve the case, particularly anyone who may have noticed something suspicious in the moments before the attack.

"If you saw someone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the attack or saw someone on a white push-bike we ask that you contact Detective Sergeant Will Loughrin at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200."

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously with the independent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
