Suspicious man in white van sought by Nelson police

1 min read

Nelson Police are investigating some suspicious behaviour involving a man in a white van.   The first is reported to have occurred on Stafford Drive Ruby Bay at about lunch time on Saturday 28th May.
A 12-year-old girl reported seeing a man staring at her as she walked along the street.  She called her mother using her cell phone and the vehicle had gone by the time her mother arrived.

The second report was from a  young girl who said a man from a white van followed her on foot along the street and she went up a drive way to get away from him.   That incident reportedly occurred on Salisbury Road, Richmond, after school on Monday 30th May

On both occasions the man was described as being in his 40s with dark facial hair.   Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney of the Nelson Bays Child Protection Team said at this stage there was no evidence to suggest the two incidents were related to each other but Police were keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed either of the incidents or has information about them.

Detective Sergeant Kaveney also said that recent reports via social media that there had been two or three attempted abductions of young girls in the area were not accurate, however this is a good time to remind parents to talk to their children about their security and to report any incidents to Police at the time.  The local school principals and Police are working together to mitigate any risks to the public.

If you have any information in relation to these events, please phone the Nelson Police on (03) 545 9869 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
