Proactive release of papers regarding petition of Jennifer Bolton
On 21 March 2024, the petition of Jennifer Bolton was presented to the House of Representatives. The petition requests that the House require Police to contact mental health services for advice when a person expresses suicidal intentions, and to establish a mental health register for Police to check whether people they are dealing with have a history of suicidal intentions to inform their decisions on their safety and care.
On 25 October 2024, the Petitions Committee presented its report to the House entitled Petition of Jennifer Bolton: Police contact mental health services for advice when a person is suicidal. The Petitions Committee recommended that Police formally adopt as operational policy the Coroner’s recommendation arising from the inquiry into the death of Jonathan Bolton: that Police should always contact mental health services for advice where a person in their care or custody expresses suicidal intentions, even if that person is intoxicated and even if there are no previous mental health or suicide risks identified.
The Government Response to the Report of the Petitions Committee was presented to the House of Representatives on 11 March 2025.
