Two fires in Christchurch overnight have left two people dead and another with serious injuries.

Police say it is far too early to ascertain if there are any links.

"We are working with Fire Safety to ascertain the cause of the fires," says Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Harvey.

A 00.45 in the early hours of this morning a passing police patrol saw a fire at 81 Avalon Street and notified Fire. When Fire arrived they located an adult and child deceased in the house.

Police are working with next of kin to locate and notify all family.

"At this stage we are not able to release names or further details. The scene examination and area inquiries will be conducted today," he says.

Ten minutes later Police were called to 137 Tancred Street and a male was located by Fire. He is currently in a stable condition in Christchurch Public Hospital in ICU.

"We ask anyone who may have witnessed either fire to contact us," asks DSS David Harvey, phone 363 894.

"There were a number of people outside the Tancred Street address who may have information to help us."

The Coroner has been advised.
