Lower Hutt Police launched a campaign against boy racers last night (Thursday 8 March).
Regularly on Thursday nights, boy racers from throughout the lower North Island converge on Lower Hutt City, often as many as 500 cars, says Lower Hutt Police Area Commander Inspector Bruce Dunstan.
"Lower Hutt Police and the community are adopting a hard line approach to boy racers and the crackdown will be ongoing.
"The influx stretches Police resources and generates a flood of complaints from residents," says Inspector Dunstan.
Lower Hutt Police will be reinforced by staff from throughout the Wellington region and from the Police College.
"There will be zero tolerance approach. The results from last night show that these people have a total disregard for the law."
What the Police found:
* 560 vehicles stopped
* 124 infringement notices issued, comprising:
- speed: 17
- seatbelts: 2
- licence breaches: 21
- offences that could lead to crashes (eg bald tires): 84
* cars impounded: 4
* licence suspension: 1
* 395 breath alcohol tests were conducted. Two people had breath alcohol levels that required an evidential breath test and one of those people required a blood test.
* highest recorded speed: 153kph
