Update following fatal single vehicle crash on SH1 near Greta Valley

Canterbury Police can confirm that the white, rented, Hyundai mini-van involved in this morning’s (7 February 2015) fatal single vehicle crash was travelling south-bound along on SH1 near Greta Valley.  The crash occurred shortly before 10.22am approx 1km south of the Hurunui River Bridge when the mini-van crossed the centre line and travelled through a paddock adjacent to the north-bound carriageway before rolling a couple of times down a steep bank.

The six occupants of the mini-van were overseas visitors to New Zealand.  One person was confirmed as deceased at the scene and the five other occupants were taken to Christchurch Hospital by air and road.  Further information, including nationality, of the six occupants will not be released until the process to inform next of kin of the deceased has been completed.

The death has been referred to the Coroner who will determine cause of death. 

Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Canterbury Police are appealing for anyone witnessed the crash or saw the white min-van on SH1 prior to the crash to contact them by calling 03 363 7400 option 5.

There will be no further updates today (7 February 2015) however an update will be provided in the next two days when the process to inform next of kin has been completed.
