Lost property

If you have lost property and don’t think it has been stolen, you can report it online to Police (if you think the items been stolen use the ‘Stolen Property’ report).

Include identifying details in your report

For example:

  • make and model
  • colour and size
  • distinguishing features
  • the serial number, if it has one and you recorded it

If Police recover lost items that match the description of your lost property, it will be easier to confirm it’s yours.

Tell the bank if your payment cards are lost

If the lost item is a payment card – for example, an EFTPOS /ATM card, debit card or credit card - contact the bank that issued the card. They can cancel the card for you.

Check whether the loss is covered by insurance

If you have contents insurance, check your policy as it may cover the loss of your items even if they were not in your home at the time.

You will receive a confirmation email with a reference number on it, that you can use when you claim on your insurance.
