Public consultation on changes to Police vetting fees

Ngā Pirihimana o Aotearoa / New Zealand Police is seeking your views on proposed changes to the charging of fees for the Police Vetting Service (PVS).

The Police Vetting Service (PVS) provides organisations with vetting (vets) to assist them in assessing the suitability of a person to be employed or engaged (including as a volunteer) in roles that involve the care and safety of children, young people, or other vulnerable persons. Police vets are also used for purposes relating to law enforcement, national security, immigration and citizenship.

The objective of the proposed changes to vetting fees is to ensure Police can sustainably meet the rising costs and demand for Police vetting, while keeping up with new technology, maintaining high service quality, and enabling equitable access to PVS across a broad range of organisations.

We want to gain an understanding of how our proposed changes may impact on your organisation, how much should be charged for a Police vet, and whether PVS should offer optional faster processing of vetting requests at a higher fee.

Police welcomes submissions from organisations that use PVS, as well as individuals with an interest in Police vetting and invites you to provide feedback via our online consultation questionnaire:

A copy of the original discussion document, on which the online questionnaire is based, is also available online (PDF, 761KB).

Our public consultation opened on 23 June 2026 and will run until 25 August 2026. Because the consultation involves reading a moderate amount of text, we recommend you set aside 30 minutes to consider the options and our reasons for proposing them and then provide your thoughts in response.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you in advance for your insights and your time.
